An Untamed State by Roxane GayMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Recently, a friend asked, "What was the last book you cried while reading?" My answer was something like, "I hate to cry, and it's so manipulative when I do while reading something."
I cried while reading this book. I cried three times. THREE! And not once did I feel manipulated. My heart was truly breaking for this woman.
Let me be clear--this is a VERY hard book to read. There's rape, and torture, and very bad things happen. But good things happen too. Roxane Gay has shown us a part of our world that we wish not to see. But we should see it--we should know what happens to women, every day, on this planet. Her heroine is not a heroine, but a woman. Gay has given us a real, believable woman, and that's why this book is very heartbreaking.
